License Server: Definition, Examples, and Common Applications

What is a License Server?

A license server is a dedicated software component that manages the issuance, tracking, and enforcement of software licenses within a network environment. It maintains a pool of available licenses, handles checkout requests from client applications, enforces concurrent usage limits, and returns licenses to the pool when sessions end. License servers are central to floating and concurrent license models and are also used in offline and air-gapped deployments where cloud-based license validation is not feasible.
