Entitlement Management: Definition, Examples, and Common Applications

What is Entitlement Management?

Entitlement management is the process of defining, provisioning, tracking, and enforcing what a customer is authorized to use within a software product, including which features, how many seats or devices, for how long, and under what conditions. Entitlements are the rights granted by a license, and their management spans the full customer lifecycle from initial provisioning through upgrades, downgrades, renewals, and terminations. Robust entitlement management reduces revenue leakage, enables flexible product packaging, and provides real-time visibility into license utilization.

Examples

  • A SaaS vendor provisions a new enterprise customer with entitlements for 500 seats, access to the premium feature tier, and a 12-month subscription term—all automatically triggered by contract execution.
  • An ISV adjusts a customer's entitlements in real time when they purchase an add-on module, without requiring a new license key.
  • A software licensing platform enforces entitlements at the feature level, enabling or disabling specific capabilities based on what the customer has purchased.
  • An enterprise customer uses a self-service portal to view their current entitlements, distribute seats to users, and track remaining license consumption.

Common Applications

  • SaaS product packaging and tiered feature access control
  • License key generation and activation management
  • Customer self-service portals for license and seat management
  • True-up processes and license compliance auditing
  • Channel and reseller license distribution and sub-entitlement management
